Abstract

ABSTRACT Asliana, NIM 15010106005. EFL Secondary High School Students’ Common Error in Writing. Supervised By: Dr. Sitti Nurfaidah, M. Ed. This study aims to investigate students’ common error in writing, especially the case of EFL secondary high school. The research was done through the use of qualitative research design, specifically conducting draft. The study involves fourteen (14) students, 6 males and 8 females. A finding shows that students have difficulty using correct verb tenses (V2), punctuation, distinguishing English in capitalization, using word choice and uncessary word in sentences. For some students, writing is a difficult process to learn, even in the first language. It is difficult, because in doing writing, students need to think hard and they have to produce words, sentences and paragraph at the same time. It is even more complicated to write in a foreign language. The researcher is interested to analyze this problem. As a result, students’ writing has been greatly affected, it has been found that most students’ common error in punctuation since from draft 1 to draft 3 has increased to 56%. It is different from students’ common error in word choice and unnecessary word in sentences has decreased to 0%. As a conclusion, students have not mastered some of the competencies despite the repetition of these lessons in previous grade and year levels. Keywords: Common Error, EFL, Writing.
