Abstract

The downfall of the Suharto regime not only proclaim freedom for speech, but also provide an arena for the contestation of religious authority, which is not a single one. Some religious authority confirms that no discourse is closed entintities. It always undergoes a transformation due to contact with another discourse. This research seeks to examine the authority of Kiyai Syarif and his congregation (Padepokan Dakwah Sunan Kalijaga). By his charisma, Kiyai Syarif builds the knowledge and practices the religiousity which is unique and unusual. This study confirms that modernity not only affecting the urban piety, but also yearning for traditionalism and nationalism. Kiyai Syarif and Padasuka construct knowledge and religious practical in the form of localityand in the frame of nationality. From this study I will argue that religious aouthority has been constructed by Kiyai Syarif and Padasuka highlight the counter culture in the form of social protest and culture negotiation which is more stable and final.
