Abstract
The research aimed to describe Brown and Levinson’s language politeness strategies in academic discourse between the students and the lecturers in STAIN Kendari. It focused on the use of negative and positive politeness in academic discourse. This research used qualitative method. The data was obtained from the conversation in academic discourse between the students and lecturer. They were data collection, reduction, presentation of data and continued by the conclusion of research findings. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the negative politeness strategies used by the student to the lecturer were the use of indirect expression, the use of pessimistic expression, the use of respect words, and asking for apology. While, the use of positive politeness strategies used by the student to the lecturer are the use of group identity, the use of small talk and presupposition, the use of offers and promises, and seeking for reasons or giving questions.
