Abstract

ABSTRACT Hildayanti. SID. 16010106080. Teacher’s Belief on Seating Arrangement in EFL Classroom. Supervised by: Dr. Sitti Nurfaidah, M.Ed. This study was investigated to know the teacher’s belief on deciding a certain seating arrangement that applied in EFL classroom. This study involved one lecturer of English Education Department of IAIN Kendari to explore his beliefs in using a certain seating arrangement in his EFL classroom. Through qualitative approach, the data was gathered through semi-structured interview. Then, the data was analyzed in way of transcribing, coding and categorizing. The results show that there are multiple reasons for deciding a certain seating arrangement (i.e. traditional, U shape, pair, and group seating). For traditional seating, lecturer believed that it is suitable to use in explaining material of the lesson and also to catch the students’ attention if they are not ready to study. If the lecturer wanted to help and make the students understand the lesson very quickly, the lecturer believed that U shape seating is suitable to use. But, if the lecturer wanted to helps the shy student to speak, then pair seating is suitable. Meanwhile, to improve the students’ confident to speak, the lecturer believed that group seating is suitable to use. This study implies that the use of seating arrangement in EFL classroom should be decided well to achieve the learning goal more easily.
